Location: 401 W Geer Street

Building Owner: Alex Washburn (located in New York, NY)

Known Details: In 2013, Washburn renovated the backside of the building—now home to the Mothership— in an effort to integrate retail into the north-end of the Central Park District. Soon after renovations were complete, Washburn and fellow Durham-based developer Robert “Bob” Chapman worked together to identify tenants. Chapman also commissioned a colorful mural by local street artist Josh McBride, which was painted on the north- and west-facing facades of the building in 2013. Later, in 2014, a co-working and retail space – now known as The Mothership— moved into the building. They invited McBride to come back and unify the space with a mural on the south-facing wall.

McBride painted a mural inside in the Greenhouse located on Duke University’s campus, and in 2015 he repainted the locally famous American Dance Festival bus.
